The Importance of Authenticity
In today’s fast-paced corporate environment, the quest for success often leads individuals to prioritise conformity over authenticity. However, forging an authentic identity is essential not just for personal fulfilment but also for gaining respect and establishing meaningful relationships. Authenticity allows individuals to express their true selves, which can contribute to a healthy and life and creativity affirming culture that fosters collaboration, innovation and a sorely absent aspect of post-modernity, awe and wonder.
Say No to Shock & Awe
Even to those who walk around with blinkers it must be becoming ever clearer that corporatism and logic rooted in materialism for its own sake leads to mass exploitation, mass brain washing, limited life-span products, ideas and beliefs, The dominance of materialism has led to a throwaway culture. Wasn't it an 'evil-genius coup' therefore to make the individuals that make up our society adopt the mindset of a tiny cog in a relentless unstoppable wheel?
How is it that we took a long ascent from being 'We the People' to programmable 'consumers' without nary a whimper? Is that it then, our only function, to buy what our corporate overlords want to sell us? Do our corporate masters know or care about what's good for us? We part answered that above when we pointed out the universal commercial reality of built in obsolescence. Shorter life-spans, mountains of toxic waste shipped around the world, population shrinkage, voluntary euthanasia, mass depression, disease and instability: these things are a realisation of the dystopia the media has been influencing society with ever since Hitler (Riefenstahl, and later Bernays), realised its hypnotic power. The theme was further laid out by Naomi Klein in 'The Shock Doctrine'.
The point for anyone who produces anything, and if you think about it, that's most of us, why would or should we get by by producing short term poor or mid quality stuff when we can thrive on creating ingenious and beautiful high quality things?
The answer is obvious - we don't have to - we can make durable, beautiful things. This would require a cultural pushback in both the commercial and social world; a rejection of long-term compromises for short term gains as propagated by accountants and at policy level, politicians and social engineers. It would require tracing the logic of materialism through all its sources, from Plato's 'The Republic' and 'The Third Wave', by futurist Alvin Toffler, through to Oliver Letwin's 1988 'Privatizing the World' and beyond. It would require saying 'No to Shock and Awe' drawing it away from socially debilitating and social policy influence mechanisms to make way for novel industrial and technological marvels and life affirming perceptions of 'Truth and Beauty' being synonymous with quality and longevity.
Navigating Conformity
In a corporate dominated world, the pressure to conform can be overwhelming. Many find themselves adapting their values, beliefs, and even appearance to fit into an organisation’s specific culture or expectations. While integrating into a team can have value it's important to know you're on the right team to begin with and it is equally vital to retain one’s unique identity. This balance can partly be achieved by embracing moral values and integrating them into professional life. Individuals who cultivate a strong sense of self-awareness are better equipped to navigate the demands of their personal and professional environment while remaining true to themselves. Creating the right moral foundation permeates every aspect in life, how you do, what you do and why you do things.
Strategies to Preserve Authenticity
There are several effective strategies that people can employ to forge their authentic identity while thriving in our complex materialistic world. Firstly, setting clear personal boundaries is essential for safeguarding one’s individuality. By defining what is acceptable and unacceptable in personal and professional interactions, people can protect their authentic selves from undue influences. Jung called this 'Individuation', we can call it authenticity.
Seeking good counsel and surrounding oneself with conscionable people of high integrity will prove invaluable. Engaging with peers who value authenticity promotes a culture of openness and can, with the correct moral under-pinning's, encourage individuals to be true to themselves rather than playing to the crowd. Lastly but most critically, embracing self-reflection can further strengthen one’s integrity and steer one's identity toward a benign if not humanistic outlook. By regularly evaluating personal goals, values, and experiences, individuals can maintain alignment between their social, professional and personal identities and take responsibility on how your actions affect the collective.
In conclusion, forging an authentic identity in a corporate dominated materialistic world is not merely a challenge but a necessity. By prioritising individuality, setting boundaries, seeking good counsel, and engaging in self-reflection, individuals can cultivate a sense of authenticity that not only enhances their experiences but also contributes positively to their friends, family and society. Embracing a benign authenticity ultimately leads to greater satisfaction, stronger relationships and a more vibrant, humane culture.
In that context I suppose we get the world we deserve, but if you think about it, wouldn't most of us question the world we live in today and maybe even do something about it if we could?
